Sunrise ruin by JakobHansson Sunrise ruin by JakobHansson
A fantasy landscape bathed in the first morning light of the day.

Photoshop CS5, Wacom Intuos 4M
Original Size: 14000 x 8000 pixels.

This painting took around 15 hours. I started out with a quick freestyle sketch, and then build up on the detail as I went along. My idea was to create a feeling of some old oil landscape painting, with a bit of fantasy twist.

I love this picture! It looks really dark and foreboding, as if there were trolls lurking under the bridge. If you wouldn't mind, could I use this for a youtube video I'm doing? Thanks, either way! :)

Hi, Thank you very much. As long as it is a non-commercial video you are making, I have no problem with it. Please write a credit (name and link to my deviant Art page) for me in the text as illustrator.

Thanks, Jakob! My video is not monetized, meaning no advertisements and such and I don't make any money off of it, though the video does have links to how people can purchase my music. I hope this is alright with you. If not, I won't use it. Thanks!

Sure, then I have no problem, as long as you remember to credit me as the artist of the image.

Nice work.

I would have increased the contrast at the foreground, making the darker shadows darker still, because the same level of contrast throughout makes the picture look a bit flat.

Yes, I can see the bits in the background where you've reduced the contrast fairly significantly to signify distant mountains...so I know you understand what I'm talking about...I just would have increased the foreground contrast to make the stuff in front really pop.

Thanks for the constructive comment! I agree - its especially easier to see for me now that the image is a couple of months old. (Eyes are not tired anymore) I will keep your good point in mind :0)

I only say it because I've found the same problem in a lot of my own works, especially when looking back at them a couple of months (or a couple of years) later.

But still, it's a nice work. There's some good atmospheric potential in the piece.

Many thanks - I am considering going back and fix a few things - but as you know its always a bit of a chore to go back to something you thought was finished ;0) Take care!

Interesting. It looks like it was constructed from dragon scales.

It looks really impressive, and while you talk about a fantasy twist, I can see this being a real landscape as well.

Interesting style.

There seems to be a (dead man's [?]) hand sticking out from under that E-shaped (or M-shaped) thing. What's that about?

Hehe - good spotting - I guess the owner of the hand was unlucky when the castle was attacked and was crushed under a piece of an exploding wall. Thanks for the comment.

Love the light in it. It looks very natural, though it feels more like a sunrise than a sunset for the palette color you chose.

Or maybe the edge of the sky is not dark enough? I know that not all sunset are in the red/orange zone, but this light blue does not have enough dusk in it.

In France we have a time of the day that we call (and I translate): Between dog and wolf. You still have daylight, but it is almost dark. The sky is not orange or red anymore, the last rays of the sun have already disappeared, but light is still there.

If you tried to represent this particular time of day, then your sky is not dark enough.

Love the details in your painting, makes it very lively, and I would never have the patience for that! the color palette except for the sky, (though it is lovely, just does not fit your description), is realistic and eye pleasing.

I am no drawing artist myself, but I admire others who can.

The ruins are a compelling sight for my imagination. The road on the left makes me wish to see what lies beyond, but the dead tree in the foregroundand the ruins in the center make me think that it may be wise not to travel that road.

The dryness of the land make me think that this place has seen battles not long ago, the death of nature reflecting the death of people. But the river and the green trees in the background bring me hope of renewal.

This is what I get from your painting.

Thank you for sharing it with us all.

I hope this helps.

Cheers!

Thama

Overall I like this piece very much.

Hello Thamalasca! Many thanks for your thoughtful and bright comments. I think you are spot on about the time of day. So I will change the title to Sunrise Ruin! Have a nice day and once again thanks for taking your time on the analysis! Best regards Jakob

You are most welcome.

Sorry that I could not do a more technical analysis of your work, but I am no drawer or painter.

I can only analyse what I feel in your work and what it gives to me.I hope soemone with the technical know how will give you a real critique that will be more helpful than mine.

I'll come again to check the rest of your gallery if you don't mind. It was the first time I saw one of your drawings, (I am part of Realm of Fantasy group, you'll find me in fantasy literature), and I found it very inspiring. Almost like a story in itself and I really like that.

I will tell you what I feel and what stories your paitings inspire me if you are interested.

Cheers!

Thama
