I see that You've drawn a 'tricky path' of your own...
Exploring the darkness always requires courage and motivation. Each of us has his own dark world inside, which is hidden in the shadow of our soul, so deep that only each of us has access to it.
I believe that the light is defined by darkness and that it can be born only inside it. The two entities define each other. The same with bad experience in life. When I see someone very kind, gentle... a good person, I start to think what kind of bad experiences shaped this human. Because all of us are shaped by our past experience and people we have met. The bad ones play a crucial role in a human's life, if they are only perceived as a lesson, not a failure. So it is important to remember our past specially these dark moments. They define who we are now. The good and bad experience bare fruit, but I perceive that bad ones as the most valuable. It's because I can understand other people going through similar situations now and be some kind of support for them sometimes, because it's something I know from my own experience... Bad experience shape personality the most.
I see the inner darkness as something beautiful and powerful. It can serve as a place where a light will be born or it can consume us. The choice is ours. Sometimes it's good to fall into the darkness of the past because it helps to appreciate what we have now and who we've become. A companion during such a 'journey' is sometimes a big help. Because as we go too deep, our light fades and we forget the way out, a helping hand of a Friend is very welcome then. But finding the one who is worth to trust so much is another matter...
Wow. First off, I've got to say that this is an incredible scene and the texture of the tentacles(?) and walls are amazing. I love the complimentary color tints used with the difference of lights. It really helps to push this image in a more natural way. The pathway helps bring the viewer to the characters without much resistance. However, I feel this could be pushed even further with the help of contrast. Right now the lantern feels like it is lighting up the entire cave while the entrance only lights up the first segment before it hits the wall. If that is what you were going for, then awesome! But if the lantern light was a bit limited, the darkness could be extended to the walls of the cave behind the character and the far wall. By doing so, it will help make the characters stand out even more as well as the tentacle(?) that is the closest to them. I think it may help bring drama to that aspect of the piece. But that's just my opinion, nonetheless, this looks great
I am only familiar with the most basic version which was one of the first popular computer games. The darkness at the edges of your composition lend to that feeling of being trapped on the path. In the game when reaching for a vine you would discover you had grabbed a snake - game over! In your painting I'm imagining the hero's surprise as he grabs a tentacle!
