Cocoon by JakobHansson Cocoon by JakobHansson
A lovely place for a picnic.

Edit: Based on a few comments I altered the background to create more atmospheric distance. I also gave the distant mountains a make over. I will soon upload a "making of" describing the process of creating this image.

I created a making off, discussing some of the process of creating the image:

A personal piece. Copyright Jakob Hansson 2012.

Hey man, this piece catched my attention and the concept is pretty interesting. The structure itself reminds me of some designs I've seen in Magic's Mirrodin Set.
I got some critique though.
First off, it's not too easy to read the size of it. For me it looked like a huge structure in a valley (because of the rock cliffs on the right and the small rivulets).
I see those rivulets as small rivers.

On the other side the contrast, the shading on the vegetation and the scale of the rock forms say the opposite.

I did a fast overpainting on my blog for visual explanation of what I mean: [link]

A small list of what I changed:
- I transformed the cliffs in the foreground
- I add saturation to the foreground and add more green to the vegetation
- I changed the lighting to a more evening-like mood
- I defined the horizon a bit more
- I add more light reflection to the cocoon-skin
- A bit of this :P [link]

I think studies of landscape photography is going to help you. Also check the FZD videos on Youtube :)

All the Best
Stryke

Thank you, I am not sure there are people in this place, but bird like creatures are a good idea. I have planned to revisit this sometime in the future anyway, so they might make an entrance.

Beautiful work. Ireally like th pense of scale you have here. I feel like the mountain in the top left might be to swashed in fram, it looks unnatural: Maybe add some smaller details to make it seem larger?

Thank you very much for the constructive tip, much appreciated! And yeah - the left mountain is not my proudest moment, so I should probably give it a brush-over when I get the time one of these days ;0)

Much respect seeing this, a lot of art of this style is plagued by grungy crappy texture to make it look better, like a cheap trick, at least that is how i feel right now, this tho is beautiful, really really good job :)

Thank you very much, I think mastering textures and brushes is very difficult, so I tend to go with a few basic brushes and then personalize it more by hand. Much more time consuming though ;0)

this is really beautifully done, and like everyone else I wonder what's going to come out of that.
from the size of the rocks in the stream, I get the impression of something as big as a house (3story)
I'd like to see more detail in the cocoon itself, though. more of a thread pattern or texture, a hint of what's within.
Hope you'll do a second painting so we can see the creature. (or if it's a spider, maybe not)
